 Using items from Discover

If you are a New Zealand teacher using Discover within a classroom context click here for further information on how copyright applies to you.

Using Discover for your personal work

You can view images and text on-screen. You can also print them off or download them, as long as each time you download an item, copy and paste it electronically, or print off a copy, you are doing this for the purposes of research, private study, criticism or review.

You can't copy, or alter or adapt the items in any other way, for example, by manipulating, cropping, overprinting, or colourising an image.

You can view the video clips and listen to the music clips online but you can't download or copy them in any way.

If you want to use an image or text from the site in your class-room work (such as a project, research paper or folio), you'll need to cite it correctly. The easiest way to cite images is to copy and paste the citation accompanying each image from Discover into your document. For essays use the citation that appears at the end of each essay.

How to order an image for personal use

You can purchase a high quality image in one of the following formats:

  • Digital print
  • Laser print
  • Photographic print
  • Loaded onto a CD

Copies of Discover video clips, music clips and copies of artworks by Matthew Hunt are not available for ordering.

Click on the "Order" link when you are viewing an item to go to the order form. The form will automatically contain information about the item, including its copyright status.

If the item is not in copyright, you'll receive an order pack in the post.

If it is in copyright, you'll need to get written permission from the copyright holder that is mentioned. We may be able to provide copyright contact details. Send the form to have a staff member contact you. Once you've got written permission, you can then request an order pack.

Publishing or publicly displaying items on Discover

If you want to publish or publicly use any of the items on Discover, for example on a website, in a book, in an exhibition, live performance, broadcast or in any other public context, you'll need to get written permission first. The items you reproduce cannot be altered in any way, for example, by manipulating, cropping, overprinting, or colourising.

If the item is not in copyright, you'll only need to contact us for permission to publish it or publicly use it.

If it is in copyright, you'll need to get permission from the individual copyright owner before you can publish or publicly use it. We may be able to provide copyright contact details - please contact us.

Permission is normally granted provided acknowledgment is made as specified and (if applicable) copyright has been cleared with the copyright owner. Fees may apply.

 Search tips

Basic search

  • This will search the whole of Discover
  • Enter your search words in the Search for box
    • Search for people using the "all of the words" option (rather than "exact phrase anywhere") as sometimes the surname appears first
    • It may help to truncate your search using ? at the end of a word, e.g. film? will find film, films and filming and 196? will find all items created in the 1960s.
  • Choose how you wish multiple words to be searched on - there are three options in the drop down list:
    • Any of the words: The best option for general searching. Finds any occurrence of one or more of your search terms in any part of the Discover record and will return the most results.
    • All of the words: A more specific option for general searching. Finds any occurrence where all of your search terms appear anywhere within the Discover record.
    • Exact Phrase anywhere: Finds any occurrence of your search terms in the exact same order as you entered them in any part of the Discover record.
