Visual Arts Learning Examples

This is only a small selection of what is offered. You may also decide to use Discover to support learning examples other than those listed below.

 Level 2 Learning Example: Paper Weaving

"Look at a variety of woven objects (e.g. kete, mats, cloaks) and talk about their purpose, their significance and ways they were made. Use paper to experiment with weaving methods and select a variety of papers to weave a personalised mat for sitting on in the classroom." (UC PK, DI, CI)

 Level 3 Learning Example: Self-portrait - Identity

 Level 4 Learning Example: Poster Design

"Explore the design conventions used in posters on a particular theme. Discuss the use of image and text, the relationship between them and the ways they are used to communicate ideas.  Level 7 Learning Example: Architectural Design

"In response to a brief to design a structure or set for an outdoor event or theatre performance, research examples of architectural and spatial design. Develop scale drawings, colour studies, elevation plans, and models of an appropriate structure for the performance or event. Present a final scale model of the structure and site as a proposed solution." (CI, PK, DI)

 Level 8 Learning Example: Photography

"Research the subject matter and ideas used in the works of a contemporary New Zealand photographer and those of a photographer from another time or place. Investigate and compare how photographic methods and technologies influence the ways in which each photographer treats their subject matter. Create a series of photographic works that explores concepts of time and place and that combines images, ideas, and technologies derived from the work of the two photographers studied." Level 1: Research art and artworks from Māori and European traditions and their contexts

"This achievement standard involves researching art and artworks from Māori and European traditions to make comment, using art terminology, on art and artworks in relation to their local or contemporary contexts. As such, it aims to acknowledge the bicultural nature of New Zealand art and society."

Students "should investigate art and artworks by contemporary artists that reflect Māori and European influences and contexts. [They] could also investigate art and artworks by a number of artists from other cultures."

This achievement standard involves analysis of art works through the descriptions of the key characteristics of selected art works and the effects of these characteristics in different art works.

"Assessment for this achievement standard will be based on the following four areas of study:

  • Māori art/taonga (traditional and contemporary)
  • art in Aotearoa (nineteenth century to the present)
  • French art (neo-classicism to post-impressionism)
  • architecture (New Zealand and international contexts - neo-classicism to post-modernism)."
